First program started in 1893
KWU’S Teacher Education Program strives to prepare teacher candidates who are ready to teach and impact students’ lives their first day in the classroom.
Teacher Education preparation has been an integral part of Kansas Wesleyan’s rich history. The first Teacher Education Program started in 1893, just 7 years after Kansas Wesleyan University opened. Graduates of the original two-year teacher preparation degree would receive a lifetime teaching license. Although requirements have changed dramatically over the years, KWU still produces quality teachers.
- Our Teacher Education early field experiences include more than 100 field hours before students enter clinical practice, offering our teacher candidates a variety of rich and diverse field experiences.
- Almost 99% of KWU students receive some type of scholarship or financial assistance.
About the Teacher Education Program
The KWU Teacher Education Department is committed to continuous assessment and improvement of our teacher education program. Data from various assessments help drive program and policy change to ensure KWU’s Teacher Education Program is aligned with State Standards.
Gaining Experience in the Classroom
Students gain experience through hands-on activities that provide authentic preparation for teaching through projects, collaboration opportunities and work in schools. Early field experiences in the Salina School District and surrounding areas provide a variety of classroom participation opportunities, which prepare the students for the challenges of an ever-changing profession.
